Unique Mothers Day Gift Idea

How Do You Find a Unique Mothers Day Gift Idea?

My Ancestors
My Ancestors

Finding a unique Mothers Day Gift Idea for me is just a matter of listening to my mom.  Throughout the year every year, I hear her say something like “I wish I had…” or “I want a…” or “Oh I love…”.  Each time I hear that, I make a mental note of it for Mother’s Day, her birthday, or Christmas (whichever comes next).

In 2014, I made a shadowbox collage for my living room wall.  One of my hobbies is researching our family history and ancestry.  I’ve been able to find tons of stories and photos from ancestors that I never knew existed.  These are special to me and so I created this collage to kind of represent me.  When my mom came over and saw it for the first time, she said, “Oh wow!  That is so cool, I want one!”.

So this year for Mother’s Day, she got her wish.  I made her one similar to mine.  The big difference between the two is that hers is bigger and includes my step dad’s side of the family while mine does not.  My collage is specific to my ancestry while hers is based on her family.

How I Made It

Making this unique Mother’s Day gift idea was actually pretty simple, but very time consuming.  My first step was to determine how many pictures I wanted to include and to print them off.  I happen to have a photo printer, so I am able to print them off at home.  Once I knew how many pictures I wanted to include in the project, I could then determine how many shadowboxes I needed, so I purchased those and any other supplies I didn’t have on hand.

Craft Supplies

When I had all of my supplies together, I began by painting the shadowboxes with colors that would match or accent my mother’s house.  After each box was painted, I would glue the picture to the back of the shadowbox and decorate it with craft flowers and other supplies I had on hand.  When all of the shadowboxes were complete, I simply arranged them nicely and glued them in place.  Once that was done, I decorated a little bit more.

This project is great when Mom lives local because you can carefully hand carry it to her house taking special care not to bounce it around a lot.  Unfortunately, my parents moved to Puerto Rico so I had to ship it to her.  The boxes came apart a bit during shipping, however, I had planned a vacation to go down there and spend Mother’s Day with her.  So I was able to fix it after she opened it.

The following video shows the making of this unique Mother’s Day gift idea.  It’s a pretty long video so I have increased the speed so that you see me working quickly but get an idea of how I did it.  Feel free to fast forward to the very end so you can see how it all came together.

As you could see in the video, my mom absolutely loved the gift.  In fact, it passed the “make mom cry” test which was the ultimate goal because I’m a brat.  It was very cool, we had it sitting on her kitchen counter where I repaired the pieces that had fallen off and each time I walked into her kitchen, I found her standing over it staring at the different pictures.

I hope this post has inspired you to find your own unique Mothers Day gift idea and maybe get creative for your mom and give her something truly from your heart.  That will touch her beyond any bouquet of flowers ever could.

Happy Crafting!

Another great crafting idea for Mothers Day, I also listen to my my mother all year long and make mental notes the things she likes and is interested in at this time. my mom collects things, the things she collects changes from time to time. For a while it was native american stuff, recently she has gone to rooster stuff. I make her a basket for Christmas with some things with whatever theme she is collecting at the time, she seems to like these baskets and she is elderly and does not really need any clothes or anything for the house.

Oh I can imagine how thrilled your Mom is to get such thoughtful gifts. Gift baskets are super fun to make and it takes a lot of thoughtfulness to make a really nice one for your mom, good on you for not just buying random things! My mom just happened to move into a much bigger house last year so she’s trying to fill her walls. This shadowbox was perfect for that. Thanks for stopping by!

This is such a great idea because I always struggle with good gift ideas. The older I have grow the more I’ve realized that sentimental gifts are almost always more meaningful than gifts that you just bought at the last second! It’s also usually a safe bet to include family in it somehow whether it be through pictures or through some other medium. Thanks for the ideas!

      Hi Matt,

You’re quite welcome, I’m always glad to share and inspire! I agree, sentimental gifts are more heartfelt and our elders tend to appreciate those more than store bought items. Family pulls at the heart strings often times as our parents start to miss their loved ones. I’m thrilled that you were inspired, thank you so much for taking the time to let me know.

    Hey Kris,
What an excellent idea for a mothers day gift. I am always looking for something unique to give to my mother. The use of a video was very effective here as it really helped illustrate just what goes in to making such a gift. Your website theme/layout matches your content and fits the desk & craft idea perfectly.

My only question for you is where did you find all of your ancestry information? Was it ancestry-dot-com or a similar site? I think if you could provide us with your favorite methods of actually finding ancestral information then we would be even closer to making such a gift for a loved one. You have explained the process beautifully and touch on the fact that you need to establish how many pictures we want to print before we get started. If you could just quickly elaborate on how you track down those pictures I think it would be a great addition to your page!

    Hope this helps!!

      Hi Ryan,

Thank you so much for the compliments! I do like to do videos when I create things, it helps inspire others to get creative sometimes. Unfortunately, this video was originally an hour and a half long as there were so many boxes to paint, so I cut the majority of the videos out to spare you guys the boredom of watching me paint box after box.

The information on my ancestors came from multiple places. I started with a genealogy chart that was passed down to me from my great uncle through my mom when I expressed interest in our genealogy. I took the information from that chart and plugged it into ancestry.com and started finding even more information. I was actually able to link up to a distant cousin on my grandfather’s side and she provided additional pictures. Many of them came from other family members or from my Mom’s own picture albums, though. I do intend to add ancestry content at some point and will definitely come back to this page and link to it. Thank you so much for the suggestion.
